Joseph "Joe" Henggeler was born in Dubuque, Iowa. In 1860, when Henggeler was just 3, his family homesteaded in Columbus, Nebraska where they engaged in farming.
At age 20 Henggeler and Herman Kersenbrock established the "Star" brewery in Columbus. He held various interest in the brewery for the next five years before becoming sole owner in 1880. In 1905 he changed the name to the Columbus Brewing Company. Nebraska Prohibition closed the brewery in 1917. Joe Henggeler passed away on March 31, 1931.
