Joshua Lathrop Carew was born in Norwich, Connecticut. In around 1846 he purchased a controlling partnership in Elisha Avery's Detroit Brewery in Michigan. In 1848 the firm was renamed Joshua Carew & Co. when Avery dropped out. He ran the brewery until his death on the 10th of October, 1861 at the age of 45. His body was shipped back to Connecticut and buried there. The brewery disbanded after his death and was eventually sold to E. E. Duncan, who turned it into a Malt House.
