Johann George Schemm was born in Gollhofen, Bavaria. In 1866 Schemm with partner Christian Gruhler started the Schemm & Gruhler Brewery in Saginaw Michigan. He died on March 24, 1899. His brewery, reincorporated under his son George C. Schemm, survived for another 39 years.
