William Tunis Ryerson was born in New York of John Adams Ryerson, the senior partner in the Ryerson and Brown Transfer Co., of New York. The family can trace their ancestors America back to 1646. In 1873 the 44 year old Ryerson joined the financially struggling ale brewery of Yuengling & Co. on 213 Front & 4th Avenue as an investor and controlling partner. He left the partnership just four years later. In 1876 Ryerson helped form the New York Cab Company, which consolidated (and undercut) the existing taxi service in the city. The Yuengling Brewery closed in 1882. Ryerson died December 28th of 1891.
