Johann Paulus was born in Bavaria. He was a trained brewer. At age 31 he emigrated to America and located in Calumet County, Wisconsin. He established a Brewery in the town of Chilton, which he continued to the time of his decease which was on the 8th of April, 1872. According to his obituary he was "generally recognized as a man who had little or no social intercourse with his neighbors and yet he was honest in his dealings".
