Francis Xavier May was born in Steinsel, Luxembourg. In the 1840s May emigrated to America and made his home in Galena, Illinois, where he was married. His family then moved to Dubuque, where he was employed as a carpenter. In 1865 he founded a brewery in Cascade, Iowa. When May died on June 9, 1895 the brewery was abandoned.
