John Wahl was born in Bavaria. At the age of 41 he abandoned his profession of master mason and opened a lager beer brewery in Monroe Michigan. He ran the Wahl Brewery until May of 1882 when his nephew, also named John Wahl, took over the business. The elder Wahl died on January 25, 1886. The Wahl brewery was consumed by fire in 1905 and never reopened.
