Thursday, December 20, 1832   George Rochevot

George Rochevot was born in Herxheim-am-Berg Rhenish Bavaria. As a young boy he was sent to Mannheim to learn the art of brewing. He became a master brewer in Lyon, France. Soon afterwards, in 1854, he emigrated to America, where he was immediately employed by a brewery in Buffalo New York. By 1857 George's entire family had followed him across the ocean to Buffalo. In December of that year he started a brewery on Spring & Cherry Street and put his family in its employ. In 1872 he sold the Cherry Street location and removed his business to 1017-1033 Jefferson Street and renamed it Lion Brewery. George Rochevot died on January 29, 1897. In 1904 the brewery was renamed Consumers Brewery and was finally closed in 1920 by Prohibition.
