1950 - 1950 | Table Rock Brewery, Andrew C. M. Hess | Probably non-producing |
2nd March 1896
Andrew C. M. Hess was born in Asheville, North Carolina. His grandfather, Christian Hess, was a German immigrant who in the late 1840s purchased a farm in Ohio County, West Virginia from Samuel McColloch. On the land was a stone outcropping on which Native Americans had carved petroglyphs. It became a curiosity to modern Americans too and eventually the formation was named Table Rock. Andrew's father Henry had post cards printed up in the 1900s and with the ubiquity of the automobile the family started promoting Table Rock as a tourist destination. At some time in the 1950s, apparently Andrew had labels printed up for Table Rock Beer. What became of this project is a mystery to me. Perhaps someone reading this will finish the story.
