Michael Sargl (also sp Sargel), a trained brewmaster, was born in Hemau, Bavaria. He emigrated to America at age 26 and settled in Buffalo New York, where he practiced his trade in one of the many local breweries. By 1873 he was listed in the directories as simply a "laborer" so in 1874, perhaps frustrated, he made his way west to the frontier of Minnesota and opened a brewery in the town of Cold Spring in Stearns County. In 1881 he sold the brewery to John Ladner and retired too a life of farming in on land he purchased in Polk County. Michael Sargl died on the 26th of April 1914. He was 70 years of age. The brewery he founded is still going strong to this day (Sept. 17, 2019).
