Sunday, May 24, 1835   Ulrich Schweitzer

Ulrich Schweitzer was born in Kuchen, Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Germany and learned the trade of coopering in his home country.  He emigrated to America at age 18 with friends from town.  He settled in St. Paul, Minnesota and became married in 1859 to Crescentia Theresa Hutter.

In 1863 Schweitzer purchased a minority stake in Dominick Troyer's struggling brewery on Eagle & Exchange Streets.  Troyer was being sued by his creditors and eventually gave up the rest of his share to William Funk.  The Wealthy hotel and saloon owner Frederick Emmert purchased a minority stake in the brewery in 1865 and by the next year he had invested enough to become the controlling partner.

Dominick Troyer, by this time, was breweryless.  He was defeated in the courts and broke.  He left for Europe and never returned.

On February 15th, 1870 Ulrich Schweitzer died aged just 34 years.  The brewery became the Emmert Brewery and was successfully run by the Emmert family for another 30 years.  It was sold to the Theo. Hamm brewery in 1901 and used for storage.
