August Schmid, was born in St Gabin, Switzerland. In 1850 Schmid partnered with Emmanuel Bernheimer to create the Bernheimer & Schmid, Constanz Brewery at Manor Road Hill above Four Corners, Staten Island, New York. In 1865 they sold the brewery and after a few owners it eventually became the Monroe Eckstein Constanz Brewery. Ultimately, the plant was closed by Prohibition in 1920. August Schmidt died on June 5, 1889.
