Fritz Goerl (center) was born in Neustadt, Germany. In 1872 Goerl and his partner Henry Boyen purchased the San Rafael Brewery from the estate of Gustave Lombard. He and Boyen ran the brewery together for 12 years. Boyen sold his interest to Grohl in 1884, after which Grohl continued as proprietor of the brewery until 1905. Fritz Goerl died on March 12, 1906.
