Matthew Vassar, relative (brother?) of John G. Vassar, is born. He took over the Vassar brewery in Poughkeepsie in 1911. He expanded the business from a brewery that produced just 15 gallons a day to a facility that in 1848 produced 20,000 barrels of ale, beer and porter.
