Established in 1778. Purchased by Interbrew 2005.
The Strangeways Brewery was founded by two grain merchants, Thomas Caister, Thomas Fry in 1778. The location of the brewery, just outside the city centre, was chosen to avoid a grain tax levied by local mills that belonged to Manchester Grammar School.
Since InBev's acquisition of Boddingtons, beer production at the brewery was slowly phased out until it stopped in 2006. The brewery was reused as a venue for a series of club nights, known as The Warehouse Project until December 31st 2006. The site is currently undergoing demolition, preceding redevelopment.
