Abram Nash was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut. In 1817 Nash started an ale brewery in Troy New York. Under his guidance and skill the brewery expanded and soon Nash was eying territory downriver. In 1846 Nash employed his son-in-law, Ebenezer Beadleston to establish a branch office in Manhattan. In 1865 the family sold the Troy brewery to James Daley and John Stanton and concentrated on their booming New York business. Although Abraham Nash died in 1871 the firm he founded in Troy (later known as the John Stanton Brewery) thrived for almost 80 more years, surviving Prohibition and finally closing in 1950.

John Stanton, president of the John Stanton Brewery of Troy, New York, was born in Cork, Ireland. At age 13 he emigrated to America with his parents during the Irish Potato Famine. After graduating from the Christian Brothers Academy he went in to the grocery business with his brothers Edward and Martin. Gradually John branched out in to brewing beer. When the opportunity arose to purchase a half stake in Troy's most successful brewery, A. B. & Co. he took it. Stanton and his partner saloonkeeper James Daley ran the brewery for the next fifteen years. In 1880 Stanton took full control of the brewery and renamed it the John Stanton Brewing Co. John Stanton died on April 14, 1917 at the ripe old age of 86 years.
