1855 - 1875 | St. Nazianz Communal Brewery |
According to Doug Hoverson's book "The Drink That Made Wisconsin Famous":
"St. Nazianz was a socialist commune that flourished in Calumet County from the 1850s until the 1870s. Multiple sources indicate that there was a small brewery in the commune, and that its products were likely served at St. Gregorius Haus, a gasthaus built at the direction of Fr. Oschwald, the leader of the community. (ref. cited) This may not have been a commercial brewery in the truest sence, and did not appear in excise records, but its presence is worth noting as a unique brewing effort in the state."
