Peter Schoenhofen, future Chicago brewery magnate, was born in Derbach, West, Germany. His is one of the most recognizable names in Chicago Brewing. The last brewery that carried the famous Schoenhofen name closed in 1971, nearly 80 years after his death.

Joseph Theurer was born in Philadelphia. In 1880 he married Emma Schoenhofen, the daughter of Chicago brewery Magnate Peter Schoenhofen. Upon his marriage to Emma he became Vice President of Schoenhofen Brewing Company in Chicago. When Schoenhofen died in 1893. Joseph took over as president of the brewery, where he remained until 1911. Joseph Theurer died on May 14th 1912 at the age of 59.
