Johann Ulrich Windisch Sr. was born in Eggloffstein, Bavaria, Germany. His father was a brewer and farmer. In 1848 He and his brother Conrad emigrated to America and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1863 He partnered with John Hauck to form the Dayton Street Brewery in that city. Hauck and Windisch ran the brewery for 15 years when Windisch took ill with a disease of the lungs. In his last days Windisch sold his share of the brewery to his partner for $550,000, which was a record transfer of that type in Cincinnati at the time.
