Leopold Frederick Ludwig “Leo” Schmidt was born in Weiterstadt, Germany. In 1876 he opened the Centennial Brewery in Butte, Montana. In 1896 he moved to Tumwater, Washington and started the Capital Breery, which became the Olympia Brewing Company.
