Charles Haid was born in Hohenzollern, Germany. He was trained as a brewer in his native land. He emigrated to America in 1872 and settled in Altoona. Pennsylvania where he met Mary Fisher. They married the next year and the year following that he opened the Union Brewery in that town. He operated the firm for twelve years and died on the 16th of August, 1886. After his death his widow carried on the company for another ten years.
