Johann Ernst Wilhelm Maack was born. In 1870 Mr. Maack took over the Manhattan Brewery in New York City, a business that, after being owned for a time by the Yuengling family, eventually become the Horton Pilsener Brewery. Maack died January 27, 1899. His brewery would outlive him by more than 40 years.
