Laurence Paul Stich was born in Cambria County, Pennsylvania of Julius and Theresa (Karl) Stich.
Julius was a shoemaker in Carrolltown, Pennsylvania who in 1874 changed careers and opened a brewery. He operated the brewery for ten years, and in that time taught his son Laurence the skill of brewing beer and the acumen to run a brewery. In 1881 Laurence left his father's side and took the position of foreman in the brewery owned by Gustave Klemmert in Altoona, Pennsylvania, some thirty miles to the east. In 1884 Laurence had saved enough capital to establish his own brewery on the corner of 3rd and 7th Streets. He named it the Enterprise Brewery and ran it for seven years.
The Enterprise burned to the ground in 1888, but Stich rebuilt it as a larger brick structure. In 1893 Stich closed his brewery to open a soft drink bottling establishment in Altoona. He also operated a distillery in nearby Carrolltown, Laurence Paul Stich died on the 30th of October, 1920 at the age of 62 years.
