Edward W. Voigt was born in Dobeln, Saxony, Germany. Voigt was the son of William Voigt, the founder of the Voigt Brewer in Detroit. He renamed the firm the E. W. Voigt Brewery after his father retired in 1871. The younger Voigt died on May 14, 1920.
