Martin Bachhuber was born in Gebelkofen, Bavaria.  He was well established in his home country when a series of personal tragedies and civil unrest forced him to emigrate, at age 36, to America in the summer of 1846.  He established himself in Mayville, Wisconsin, where he resumed his profession of veternarian.  

In 1855 he purchased a small brewery on Main Street from Benedict Meyer.  He ran the brewery for 12 or 13 years, then sold the brewery in the late 1860s to John Henninger.  The brewery was sold to Martin's son Emeron in 1869 who disposed of it to Leonard Uhl the very next year.  After two more owners in the 1870s the brewhouse became the property of the Ziegler family, who ran it until Prohibition.  

Martin Bachhuber died on April 14th, 1870, at the age of 60 years.

Benedict Mayer was born in Heimertingen, Bavaria.  He emigrated to America and arrived in Dodge County, Wisconsin some time before 1852.  He was married in March of that year to Anna Sophia Possin, a fellow German emigre.  Together they had 10 children.

In 1853 Mayer erected a small brewery on Mayville's Main Street to suppliment his meat market business.  He sold the brewery two years later to Martin Bachhuber, and from then on devoted full time to the occupation of butcher.

Mayer died on June 30th, 1903 at the age of 82 years.  The brewery he founded on Main Street had gone through several ownership changes after Mayer sold it and finally became the Matthias Ziegler Brewery.  It closed in 1920.

Mattheus Ziegler II was born in Grosswenkheim, Lower Bavaria.  He emigrated to America with his wife Adelheid, formerly Dannhauser, on the 17th day of September 1858.  They settled in Mayville, Wisconsin to be near Adelheid's family friend Mrs. Barbara Henninger, whose husband Johann worked in a brewery in town.  Mattheus was a stone cutter by trade but went into the Saloon business soon after arriving in Wisconsin.  The saloon business expanded to brewing and after a few years he sought to purchase a proper brew house.

In 1874 he bought Benjamin Mayer.'s South Side brewery in Mayville.  Mattheus's oldest son Louis was 15 years of age at the time and was immediately put to work. When Louis came of age he was charged with the management of the firm. 

Mattheus Ziegler died at age 57 on the 17th of February, 1892. Louis continued the brewery for another 10 years before purchasing the Goeggerle brewery in the neighboring town of Beaver Dam.  The Mayville brewery continued under the Mattheus Ziegler name until Prohibition closed it down in 1920.
