Frederick Richter and Philip Eder appear in the 1870 census as next door neighbors in Fountain City and brewers. Richter had a personal estate of $5000 and Eder a personal estate of $3000. Both had equal real estate valuations of $3000, suggesting (to me) equal partners, rather than competitors, in a successful brewery.
