Made especially for the Hotel Astor in New York City. Wm. C. Muschenheim, manager. This bottle was probably filled with beer from the German brewer Wurzburger Hofbrau, as Luchow was an importer of theirs.
The original collector, Henry Stephens apparently visited the hotel on July 12, 1913, a little over a year after the owner of this hotel, John Jacob Astor, died in the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. This label was originally collected by world traveler, author, and eccentric Dr. Henry Stephens III. He collected Beer and Mineral Water labels between 1905 and 1928. He died in 1932. |
