David Theobald Jaquillard was born in Struth, France. He came to America in the 1840s. He settled in Newark, New Jersey and was engaged in the barrel-making business. In 1855 he partnered with brewer George Lorenz to form a brewing company at 33 Hamburg Place.

When Jaquillard died on the 17th of August, 1858, Mr. Joseph Hensler purchased his partnership. Hensler eventually became sole proprietor of the brewery. The firm would go on to survive prohibition and continue to operate as the Joseph Hensler Brewing Co. until 1958.

George Lorenz was born in France. He emigrated to America in the early 1840s and settled in Essex County, New Jersey. There he partnered with fellow french immigrant David Jaquillard to establish a brewery at 33 Hamburg Place in Newark. When Jaquillard died in 1858 his brother-in-law, a young German brewer named Joseph Hensler married his widow. Two years later Hensler took over the deceased's partnership. The brewery thrived under this management until Lorenz's death on August 9th, 1877 at age 49. At that time Hensler took sole proprietorship of the brewery. The firm would go on to make beer for another 97 years.

Joseph Hensler Sr. was born in Gutenstein Konstanzer Landkreis, Germany, son of brewer Bonifatz Hensler. Joseph and his brother Adolph F. learned the brewer's trade in his father's brewery in Moeskirch. Joseph emigrated to America in 1854 and found employment as a journeyman in the Schalk Bros. brewery in Newark, New Jersey. The Schalks were able and ambitious, and surely the situation was mutually beneficial.

In 1857 opportunity came knocking. David Jaquillard, a fellow Newark brewer of the firm Lorenz & Jacquillard, died, leaving his partner in need. Hensler obliged, and married tJaquillar's widow the next year. In 1859 Hensler also obliged Lorenz by purchasing the deceased's partnership from his new wife. The two operated as Lorenz & Hensler until 1866, when Hensler bought Lorenz's share as well.

Under Hensler's management the brewery continued to grow. Eventually he brought his sons Joseph Jr. and Adolph F. into the business. Hensler died on March 29th, 1902 at age 72 years. The brewery bearing his name succeeded him by more than 50 years, the last barrel rolling off the line in 1958.

Joseph Hensler, Jr. was born in Newark, new Jersey. He was the son of Joseph Hensler, a Newark brewer. In 1891 the senior Hensler admitted his sons Joseph Junior and Adolph F. into partnership and renamed the firm the Joseph Hensler Brewing Company. The brewery flourished under the guidance of the Hensler family for decades afterwards. It survived Prohibition and Repeal, finally closing its doors in 1958.
