Businessman and Beer magnate Joseph Schlitz died on a return voyage from Germany when his ship hit a rock near Land's End, England and sank. He was 44 years of age. In his short life Schlitz started a firm that would become a leader of the American brewing industry. Schlitz's had expressed a wish that his brewery forever bear his name and that request was honored by his family and employees for over a hundred years.

As directed by Schlitz's will, nephew-in-law 33 year old August Ãœhlein, with brothers Henry and Edward, become controllers of the Jos. Schlitz Brewery after Schlitz died at sea at the young age of 44. His will directed that the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company name never be changed.
