Jacob Luther was born in Homburg, Saarland, Germany. He came to America, probably with his brothers and sisters in 1849. They all settled in Quincy, Illinois where Jacob started a brewery on State Street and his brother Adam opened a brewery on Oak Street.
Jacob ran the brewery until April of 1880, when he died and his wife Mary took it over. She sold or leased it to Durrstein & Co., after which it passed through two more owners or lessees before closing in 1911.
