John Geywitz was born in Württemberg, Germany. Geywitz was the first of a series of brewers to run the Eagle Run Brewery in Shamokin Pennsylvania after the founder, Godlob Fritz, sold it to him in around 1865. In 1893 the brewery was purchased by Phillip Fuhrmann, who with Max Schmidt ran the firm for 27 years as the Eagle Run branch of the Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewery. Prohibition closed the firm down in 1920.
