This beautiful can (from a set of 18) was designed in 1977 by American artist Stephen R. Kidd, whose work has hung in both the White House and the Smithsonian. The buildings were accurately reproduced using period photographs and drawings as a reference. The front of the can shows an arial view of the brewery on a green spring day. In the courtyard behind the factory are several tents and a garland arch where people are mingling. I suspect this is a festival to celebrate the release of the yearly cache of Bock Beer from the brewery. Outside the brewery walls are half a dozen aging vats - surely a neighborhood temptation!
Keystone State
After Jacob Conrad, a Bavarian brewmaster emigrated to America in 1945, he worked for The George Lauer, Manger & Dittmer Breweries. Enlisting at President Lincoln's first call in Co. 1 of the 95th Pennsylvania Regiment, he resigned his command, due to injury, after the battle of Antietam. In Philadelphia, in 1875, he started The Keystone State Brewery, named after the state banner of this regiment.
