Eberhard Anheuser was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. He was trained as a chemist and in 1843 he emigrated to America, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio where he opened a soap factory. In 1845, at age 39 Anheuser and his family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he continued in the soap and candle business. In 1852 he invested in the new Bavarian Brewery in that city. Despite the brewery's initial struggles he continued pouring money into it. By 1860 he had bought out all other investors and had changed the name to E. Anheuser & Company. He was 54 years old. Adolphus Busch was in his early 20s at this time and already was a partner in a St. Louis brewery supply business. Anheuser surely took note of this enterprising young man more than 30 years his junior and eventually introduced him to his daughter, Lilly. In 1861 they were married, an event that was the beginning of, not only a romantic partnership, but a business partnership as well. The Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association would go on to become the largest brewery in the world. Eberhard Anheuser died in St. Louis on May 2nd, 1880 at age 74.
