Charles Emil Hansen was born in Germany. He emigrated to San Francisco as a young man during the latter years of the Gold Rush. In 1857, at age 23 he partnered with John F. Glueck to organize the National Brewery in that city. Hansen died on July 22nd, 1908 but his brewery continued on. It re-emerged after Prohibition as the Cereal Products Refining Corp., later known as the Acme Brewery. The firm was purchased in 1954 by the Liebmann Breweries of New York City and reorganized as the California Brewing Association. The plant finally closed down in 1958.
