History of the Schwechat Brewery of Schwechat Germany:

Peter Descrolier, valet and steward to the Archduke Matthias, founded the Schwechat "Brauhaus" at Frauenfelde zu Schwechat in 1632. This was the fourth brewery to be established in Schwechat and in the course of time it was subjected to both frequent damage and changes of ownership. However, on October 22, 1796, the Dreher era commenced in Klein-Schwechat, when Franz Anton Dreher, the senior brewery master of the imperial capital and residence of Vienna, purchased the "Brauhaus".

Following a number of long study trips, Franz’s son, Anton, assumed the management of the company from his mother in 1837. At that time, he brewed a top fermented beer, which he called "Kaiserbier". This was full-bodied, but as was usually the case with the top fermented beers of the period, lacked quality. Therefore, in 1839, Anton Dreher converted his brewery to bottom fermented production and thus initiated the history of lager beer. Dreher made the major breakthrough in 1841, when he realised that one factor was of special significance to his "Lager" or "Wiener Typ", namely the cooling process. Dreher built huge cellars and began to store ice. Moreover, in 1877, the first refrigeration machine was installed, which had been built as a prototype for Dreher’s brewery in Trieste by Carl von Linde. By this time, Dreher’s brewing empire stretched across the entire Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the "Klein-Schwechater Lagerbier" was an enormous success.

In 1913, Anton Dreher Brauerie AG joined forces with Adolf Ignaz Mautner von Markhof and in1935, the Mautner-Markhof family bought up the remaining shares from the last Dreher heir. In 1978, the Schwechat Brewery became part of the former BRAU AG, which today is the BRAU UNION ÖSTERREICH.
